Designing With Art
Taking your design ques from your favorite art pieces, can make your designing efforts easy and simple. Most times!
Take a look at the colors in the art, observe how they blend in their relationship to one another. What I like to do is find and identify the colors that are represented the least. I like taking from one of these colors and making it the primary color for the room. It will then draw out visually that minimal color in your art work. Then I use the other minimal colors for bold accents. This creates a balanced and beautiful designed space.
Designing a room is much like an artist painting that wonderful piece of art on a canvas. Like the artist, the designer balances between colors and space. Creating a visual pathway to view the subject or focal point in the piece.
When there is no art
When your design project is starting from scratch, there may not be any art to work from. So often, my clients may not have an eye for art. But love art when they see it on the walls in a gallery, museum or a public space, they appreciate the beauty that it brings. They want that look in their homes or offices, but just don't know how to make it a part of their spaces. This is when I jump in and build a bridge for them to embrace art, helping them to identify what they enjoy and getting it up on their walls.
When there is no art sometimes you have to create your own, improvise! Nothing can add more value to a space than when you create something yourself for it. Photography (if you are good with a camera) of some place you have traveled, or a still life of an object(s) you just love can work wonders. If you are good with a brush and canvas go for it. It's your space. So create for it.
I conclude art is your friend when it comes to designing your space. Do not be afraid to use art in your design. It will bring you a sense of continual joy and satisfaction whenever you pause to view and take it in, in your home or office.
Let your home/office be your gallery and your gallery be your office/home.
